During the hot summer months when you work or exercise outside for more than an hour, you need to drink before you are thirsty to avoid dehyration.

Thirst is very late sign of dehydration and you do not feel that you need to drink fluids until you have lost two to four pounds. The only mineral that needs replaced is salt along with sugar with long periods of exercise or work activlity. Any sports drink will work that tastes good to you.

Fluid replacement for the althete and the out of shape individuals are equally important. Dehydration stresses the body increasing heart rate raising core temperatures and fatique.

How much should you drink? A safe rule of thumb would be about one water bottle per hour. Over one hour add a sports drink with salt and sugar.
