Herniated or "bulging" discs cause many people a great deal of concern. But consider this: If we were to do an MRI on a group of people that have no low back pain or symptoms, over 40% of them would show that they have a "bulging" disc.
Discs act as shock absorbers in the spine, but may become damaged due to wear and tear. They can cause pain or other symptoms when micro-tears create a chemical irritation of the nerves and surrounding tissue. If the bulge or herniation is big enough, it may put pressure directly on spinal nerves.
According to the Mayo Clinic, "A herniated disk generally gets better with conservative treatment. Surgery for a herniated disk usually isn't necessary."
